one afternoon just north of sydney my kiwi friends and i were cruising through a very small town called mt white and we stopped at a cafe to refill our water.. a young worker named caitlin happily refilled our bottles and then asked us where we were staying the night.. 'we are looking for a place to set up our tents/hammock right now' we said.. she then told us that we would be more than welcome to stay at her family's home down the road.. she told us 'yea its no problem, mum is always picking up hitchhikers and random travelers'..
so we ventured on to their home and immediately asked for 'mum'.. within 5 minutes of arrival we met half of the town, had beers in our hands, and a site for a huge bond fire in their back yard.. mum and john turned out to be some of the nicest most wonderful people i had ever met.. by the end of the second night we all felt like family and i was so happy to have been able to spend some time with them.. i only wish we could have stayed longer.. we hung out with their neighbors gary (aka gaz) and colin, and spent time with caitlins younger sisters sophie and tara.. mum and john run a local catering business so i got to work and one evening after dinner we were all playing a card game called 'spoons'.. robins (one of my kiwi buddies) suggested that the loser of each round has to eat a spoonful of whatever the winner chooses from the pantry.. he must have thought badly of the idea when he was later eating a spoonful of chocolate and bbq sauce covered dog food!!! also the father, john, is a strong chess player so he and i slugged i out for hours and finished about 4-4.. though we have since continued the games on an online chess site.. it turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life and goes to show why you should approach and talk to EVERYONE YOU CAN!! i am eternally grateful to their family and would do anything on earth for any of them.. i only hope they will require something of me one day!!
